Who remembers the Colonial Room?

I've been using Pages for the iPad to create booklets of my life. This ongoing project wouldn't be complete without a Lazarus entry. One of my favorite places as a kid was the Colonial Room at the Lazarus Department store. You could eat a huge plate of dressing with gravy for a quarter. After some searching on the Internet, I found the recipe for it. I've posted it here. You'll also find a few other favorites, too.

Celery Dressing
Ingredients
Celery Dressing for six servings
mix together:
1 lb fresh bread, torn in pieces
2 Small onions, chopped fine
1/3 Cup celery, chopped fine
mix together:
1/2 Cup milk
2 Tbl. melted chicken fat or unsalted butter
mix together:
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp sage

Directions
Combine all ingredients and pile lightly in baking pan. Steam in pressure cooker for 10 minutes or in a steamer for 30 minutes. Serve with chicken or turkey gravy. This is a potato replacement - not suitable for stuffing inside the bird. It's very moist.

  1. I thought I was the only one who had this memory. Our Lazarus in Huntington (Barboursville), WV had a Tea Room. They had the most amazing bread pudding you ever ate. I have a copy of the Lazarus Cookbook put up somewhere if you ever need a recipe.

I had a Lazarus Cookbook and loaned it to someone and they cannot find it. Would you be able to send the receipt for the Bread Pudding??? Thank you so very very much!! 3. Lazarus was an amazing store I remember the Chintz Room too, too bad it's gone. Haven't been in a Macy's for years. Macy's is just Wall mart with attitude.
