Gold Cup Matinee

My friends and I had a great time watching Jimmy Stewart in It's a Wonderful life. Afterwards, we ate dinner at The Fish House/Cafe' Beignet. It was my first time tasting a beignet. If you're a Princess and the Frog fan, you know something about this delightful southern sweet.

When I was young, afternoons were often spent watching Gold Cup Matinee. I couldn't get enough of the old movies. To this day, I can't resist one; so, I'm doing an old movie marathon today. Thanks to Netflix stream and apple tv, I'll be able to spend today in my "home" theatre watching a few favorites:

Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation
The Pajama Game
My Favorite Brunette
To Paris with Love
The Girl from Manhattan

Popcorn and candy are a must...Happy 60 Day Celebration to me!

The Big Screen

Before dvd players and instant streaming, there was the big screen. Going to the movies was a really big part of my childhood. I loved taking the bus downtown to the Palace Theatre. It was so grand. During the summer months, the family would pile into the car and go to the local drive-in. By the time I was in high school, the neighborhood multiplex cinemas had come on the scene. Downtown palace type theaters and drive-ins are now rare. Fortunately, some cities have preserved the local palace type theater...I'm glad. Today my friends and I are going downtown to see a Jimmy Stewart movie on the big screen. I can't think of a better way to celebrate one of the days of my 60 day celebration.

Today's Scavenger Hunt

Today a dear friend and I went to antique shops looking for items from the 50's. My list of things to find included a toy from my childhood, a women's magazine published in 1951, and a 1951 Life magazine. I found a Good Housekeeping magazine from 1958. The hunt is to be continued...

Birthday Celebration Scavenger Hunt

As part of my 60 days of celebrating, I've put together several scavenger hunts for myself. The first one was to go to drugstore and buy five candies I loved as a kid. My findings were shocking...there is no such thing as penny candy anymore...or nickel candy...or dime candy... or quarter candy...The cheapest item on my list was a bag of m & m candies. They were on sale for 49 cents. Bazooka bubble gum comes in a pack of 12 for 99 cents. I've always been in love with the Pez Candy Dispenser...$1.79. The 5 cent candy bar, Crunch, is now 99 cents...Necco Wafers...80 cents. This stash would have cost me about 50 cents back in the "good old" days. Today...$5.30.

Changing Times

I finished The Good Bad Boy. It was definitely a good old days book. Today I'm celebrating with another childhood favorite. This piece of historical fiction started me on my life long love for this genre. I still remember the day I checked this book out from the public library. Little did I know there would be a day when I would zap this book to my ipad in a matter of seconds. Times have definitely changed...Happy 60 Day Celebration to Me!

Before the DQ Blizzard

Before the DQ Blizzard was born, Dairy Queen had a wonderful drink call the Root Beer Freeze. It was a blended float. This delicious treat was one of my favorites. Today I'm celebrating with my version.

Wish is Granted

I have always wanted to take a photography class. This wish goes back to the early 70's when I purchased my first 35 mm Canon camera. Well, today my wish was granted... I will be taking a photography class this fall! The picture of the dog has nothing to do with it...just wanted to get your attention.

Life is a Jigsaw Puzzle

Today's gift is a jigsaw puzzle. The picture in the puzzle transports me to another time and place. It also got me thinking about how puzzles and life are a lot alike. In high school all the pieces are dumped on the table. You spend most of your time sifting through the pieces and trying to make sense of it. During your 20's, piecing the border is easy and you think that things will always be that way. As you mature, the inside pieces present one challenge after another. Finally, when you near 60, the puzzle is almost complete and here is the dilemma...there are a few pieces left...you want to finish it quickly to admire the results...however, you don't want to finish it because that will be the end...No, wait...I'll just start another puzzle...Didn't know I was so deep...

Clay Mask

I've never really had the desire for a facelift. I'm just happy to feel great and be on just two meds at my age. Today I decided to apply a clay mask on my face. Above is the after shot...

I can't believe I'm publishing this on the World Wide Web...

This is the photo before using the magical "facelifting" editing app...

The Good Bad Boy

You are looking at one of my favorite childhood books. I must have read this book a dozen time when I was in elementary school. A few years ago, I tracked down a copy of it...thank you Internet. As part of my Birthday Celebration, I'll be transported back in time tonight via this book. I can't wait...

Social Networking

As I was sifting through old photos today, I came across my First Communion pictures. What does this have to do with social networking??  I've reunited with two friends on Facebook who were in the same First Communion class fiifty three years ago...now we have grown kids. I guess that's what I like about Facebook...you connect with family and friends...isn't that what life is all about...

My gift today was a pair of dressy sandals.

Vintage Slippers

Vintage Slippers

When I was a kid, I took a knitting class at a local yarn shop. This "vintage pattern" was my learn to knit project. I guess that makes me vintage. As part of my 60 Days Celebration, I'm going to knit a pair.

The Early Years

I don't have many photos from my childhood. This one dates back to when I was about three years old. I wonder if I strangled that cat to death??  Definitely have a death grip on it.

I celebrated with a new Sudoku book today. It's part of my strategy to keeping my mind active...

Comfort Zone

If my grandson had been a cowboy, he would have strapped a gun on his hip, filled his canteen with water, jumped on his horse and used the sun as a gps when going on a roadtrip.  Today I grabbed my cell phone, ipad and gps, filled  Ol' Blue with gasoline and took off to parts unknown. Times have changed...

Leaving the comfort zone has its rewards...I made a last minute trip to Ohio to see my great niece in a production of Willy Wonka. She did a wonderful job in her role as Mrs. Goop. To my surprise, my three sisters came down for the event, too. It's been 5 years since we've all been together. It was a great way to begin my celebration.

Birthday Celebration Begins!

When Oprah turned 50, she had a gigantic celebration. Her celebration was the inspiration for my 60 Day Event!  I'll be 60 in just that many days, and I'm celebrating!! Since I don't have Oprah's money, mine is on the cheap...Hope you'll join me for the 60 days. Even if you don't, remember... each day is a gift...celebrate!

I started planning this event in early June. It began with a list of 60 things/activities. One of the items on the list was to do something out of my comfort zone. I wrote down skinny dipping because I couldn't think of anything else. Well, yesterday I learned that my great niece is performing in Willy Wonka at the Portmouth Little Theatre. So on the spur of the moment, I've decided to go. That's really out of my comfort zone. I'm never spontaneous... today I am... Happy Birthday Celebration to Me!! As for skinny dipping...you'll never know.
