Earlier today, I posted about organizing my scraps into manageable pieces. From theses strips and squares are hidden treasures waiting to be created. While cutting the scraps, I found some really cute Christmas fabric from a few years ago...perfect for a holiday bow tie...

Like most quilters, I have a lot of scraps. I Decided it was time to do something with them. My "inner self" wanted to organize the scraps. My plan is to cut all my scraps (51- gallon bags stuffed with scraps) into squares and strips. I took this pic on day two of this project...let's just say, I have a long way to go...
When I saw this little bag in Patchwork, Please, I new I had to make it. Looking ahead in the book, every project is one that I want to try; however, the time isn't there for keeping up with the weekly pace. It's with a heavy sigh that I have decided to put the rest of the book's projects on hold for the now. I will be putting my energy and creative juices to work on other projects that have been on the back burner. I'll keep you posted…
Georgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09652563288597518607noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886723151770442019.post-33306527731618617732013-08-31T07:26:00.000-04:002013-09-09T10:11:49.573-04:00Finished Christa's Quilt Along Quilt!

Living life on the threshold of the "Golden Years" is not exactly life in the slow lane. I'm caring for my three young grandsons (6 months, 3 years, and 5 years) during the week. This time with them is truly a gift from God, and I am thankful for every minute with them. Even though the buckaroos keep me hopping, I manage to squeeze some time in the wee hours to work on sewing projects. It's been a great experience participating in the Christa's quilt along. The quilt is not perfect; however, it mirrors how something can still be lovely even with its flaws. All of the fabrics were purchased while vacationing out west this summer. Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and Oklahoma are represented along with fond memories of my husband and our little dog traveling together.

Georgiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09652563288597518607noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886723151770442019.post-54037939706195420862013-08-12T21:10:00.000-04:002013-08-14T19:32:20.274-04:00Handmade Tote

I normally don't purchase fabric unless I have a project in mind; however, I fell in love with Carrie Bloomston's "Collage" collection for Windham Fabrics at a local quilt/fabric shop and had to buy a little of each design in the collection. When my daughter requested a tote, I didn't need to rush out and find just the right fabric…maybe there is something to building a stash….

Last month I made a commitment to myself to do at least one project from each of my many quilting/sewing books and magazines. It has something to do with being in the "Silver" stage of life… use what you have…Here's the update:

1. I completed the Wonky Log Cabin and Wonky Nine Patch from the book, Modern Quilting Bee Block Party.

2. Once again, I found my self chopping the blocks into smaller blocks…I have a tendency to do that when I'm not happy with the results…

3. Took the two blocks and created the lap quilt that is pictured. It's the perfect size to cover my legs on cool evenings.

Before moving on to the next book, I have to finish a quilt for Christa's Quilt Along and sew together a tote for my daughter…
I'm a purpose driven person. All my projects reflect this personality trait. Whenever I come across an inspirational picture, my first thought is what purpose will it serve? If there isn't one, I move on…crazy or practical?? When something has a purpose, there is no stopping me. I'm happy to report that my daughter and I are in desperate need of hot pads. It was the perfect project for this reason. I loved being able to go to my scrap basket and pull enough bits out to complete the project! One down…three to go!
I made this small quilt for the Tampa Modern Quilt Guild Challenge. We were suppose to use negative space as the primary focus. My finished product was quite by accident. It all started when my daughter requested another baby quilt. Being the good mom, I immediately made a quilt with a stack of polka dot fat quarters. The finished product made my stomach turn. There was a polka dot fabric in the mix that had a putrid green background with mustard, red, blue and white dots. The quilt top was placed in my Quilt Disaster Drawer to rest for all eternity…I had an eureka moment and decided to CHOP out the ugly fabric. This was accomplished by creating 4 x 4 blocks. I arranged those blocks as seen in the pics. Pictures represent front and back…you choose…
Wonky Log Cabin

I love to buy books on quilting and sewing; however, I feel a little guilty about letting them collect dust. That said, I'm challenging myself to work through the many books and magazines by doing at least one selected project from each one. This journey will be ongoing…

I think The Modern Quilting Bee Block Party book by Alissa Haight Carlton and Kristen Lejnieks is a good place to start. I've completed the first block. My paper pieced wonky log cabin doesn't have the zing factor. I'm already at the point where I need to decide to scrap it or modify it. Think I'm going to go down the modification road. This happens to me all the time.

I decided to chop the block into four smaller blocks. I think I like it a little better…

Now should I create something with the four little blocks or continue with the book and see what happens. What do you think?

I've been working ahead on Patchwork, Please! Sew Along projects. I love the side pockets on this scrappy box. With each project, I'm discovering new techniques which I'll be able to incorporate in future projects.
I love pin cushions! It must have something to do with my fascination with miniatures. You think a person who loves the little cushions would have a room filled with them… nope, this is my first one. I think it may be the beginning of a new obsession…
Our quilts are beginning to look like quilts over at the Christa's Quilt Along Flickr Group. This is my first attempt at a large quilt. I'm still a bit apprehensive about quilting this baby on a regular sewing machine. Suggestions?? A bottle of wine comes to mind for some reason…
I made this hat for the Patchwork, Please! Sew Along. I happened to have some fleece in my stash that was perfect for the project. I added a velcro strap for ease of use. Even though my grandson is just 5 months old, he seemed thrilled when I put it on his head. It suited his personality perfectly.
I love bucket hats on little kids. Need I say more? Here's the link to the free pattern. I want to thank the publisher for releasing a free pattern from the book Oliver + S Little Things to Sew. You need to go take a peek…
I'm having a great time doing the little projects in Patchwork, Please. The bib was to have bias tape around it. After fighting with it for far too long, I changed the design a little…
I love the projects from the Patchwork, Please Sew Along. I adapted the book quilt to fit my needs. It's perfect for making a library book tote. My grandkids and I go to the library weekly. This bag will easily accommodate ten picture books. Even though I use my iPad for most of my reading, there is nothing better than visiting the local library…
Here's another project from the Patchwork, Please book sew along. When you make four, they are placemats…since I made only one, it's a dog food bowl mat. I like the pattern and will probably make a set of placemats someday…

In just a very short time, I will be returning to Florida to be with the grandkids. I've spent the past week doing projects for a sew along and a quilt for a quilt along. Think I'm getting close to burn-out… For some reason, my projects have been more involved than anticipated. It might have something to do with not reading the directions very carefully… I have a tendency to just look at the picture and go with it on my own…that's not always a good thing. This apron is for the Patchwork, Please Sew Along. Decided I needed a short apron to hold small items that often get misplaced while sewing. If you want to participate in the Sew Along, there's a link on my sidebar.
Participating in the Patchwork, Please Sew Along is a great way to try new techniques or to put your esisting skills to the test. I have learned something new with each project. This little tea pouch is perfect for holding my favorite tea. It's the perfect size for my wristlet. Now that's my cup of tea… It's not too late to participate this sew along…just click the link on my sidebar.

Last summer, I tossed away all my crew neck t-shirts because they were not flattering on my narrow shoulders and pear shaped figure. The boatneck style is much more flattering for me. Well, I had an "eureka moment" when my husband was getting ready to toss away his souvenir t-shirt. He had ripped a small whole in the neck of it from pulling off the price tag. It occurred to me that I could experiment with it. I'm glad I did… With a few quick steps, I had a flattering t-shirt to add to my wardrobe.

2. Use your favorite seam ripper to remove the ugly crew neck band.

3. Remove loose threads.

4. MOST IMPORTANT STEP

Measure 1/4 to 1/2 inch to one inch from neck edge along shoulder seam. I measured an inch and it was too much. Use a fabric marker of choice to make a curve line to meet at front edge as shown in the picture . Note in the pic that I curved to about three inches. Do this on both shoulders. This marked line is your cutting line. Cut through both front and back layers following this line. When you get to the neck edge on the front, you will follow it as you continue to cut the back. You"ll meet both layers again as you continue to cut.

5. With an iron, roll and press under a quarter inch. Repeat this process a second time.

6. Change the needle on your sewing machine to a knit/jersey needle. This type has a ball point for easier stitching. Use matching thread to topstitch around the rolled edge. I didn't have matching thread…I used white. I think of it as decorative stitching….

7. Press
8. Enjoy your new look!
This week's project for the Patchwork, Please Sew Along is a tea cozy. Since I don't need a cozy, I created a sewing machine cover. My first attempt had paper pieced letters. It was a disaster! Out came the scissors and I hacked it off! The diamond pattern was quilted with the help of blue painter's tape. Wish I could remember where I got this tip…I would give her/him credit.
