This week's adventure was a complete surprise. My plan was to go to lunch at a cafe known for its wild and zany decor. I thought it would be a fun place for capturing pictures. I never made it to that cafe... You are looking at the most amazing collection of Americana artifacts. My lunch companion and dear friend is married to the collector of these gems. He has done a fabulous job of displaying his treasures.

2. My guest bathroom- You can find pretty things to snap without leaving the comforts of home.
3. Cash Register as a Model- The camera's eye is amazing.
5. Lunch- It's time to buy a macro lens.

This week's adventure took me to Ramsi's Cafe on the World. I'm always a little shy about getting my camera out in restaurants, so I almost didn't use it. When I spotted the cute little salt and pepper shakers, I quietly took a quick pic. Apparently a young waiter was watching because he came over and offered to give me a tour of the place. It wasn't crowded, so I accepted. I'm glad I did...

Even though the sun was shining brightly today, the wind blew its gusty breath as a command to stay in the house. I'm glad I obeyed because it led me to look around within the house for something to shoot. Many years ago my husband was given an old cash register belonging to a relative who owned a meat shop in the early 1920's. We toyed with the idea of have it refinished... I'm glad we didn't. As I shot, my mind marveled at the detail and workmanship of this fabulous old machine. The aged silver still has a grace and elegance that is often forgotten in our disposable world. Grace and elegance... a simply silver moment...

I'm a Newbie at using Photoshop Elements 10. I believe you learn by doing and sharing; therefore, I've created a tutorial on how to make a cute little calendar to go on the sidebar of your blog or desktop. If you look to the top right sidebar, you'll see what I mean. I'm thinking the cute little grandson is making the calendar cute... I have probably broken every Elements good user rule... here goes...

Easy Calendar Creator with Elements 10

Materials

Calendar Template

Do a Google search to find a calendar template
Select one
Click print- When the window opens look for the pdf box in the lower left corner.
Open this box and save as a pdf file. Remember where you saved it. Do not print.
Open PSE 10
Select New Blank- make it 10 x 7.5 inches
Click File>Place and select the calendar that you saved as a pdf.
Size and place, as desired. Click green check when finished.
Click File>Place and select a photo
Adjust to fit. I left a small border to serve as a frame. Click the green check when finished.
Change the opacity (lower) of the photo layer. Watch the calendar appear. Set to your liking.
Flatten the layer
Save as a jpg

Note- You may have to erase unwanted parts of the calendar layer.

I'm always looking for the perfect iPad App. There are many that come very close to being my favorite. Photogene is one of them. It's a photo editing app with many great features. It has several presets and a nice Collage Maker. I created this collage in a matter of seconds. This little program is great for when you're traveling and don't have access to Photoshop Elements, etc. For $2.99, it's a steal. An additional set of collage layouts costs $1.99.

Word Cloud with Photoshop Elements Tutorial

My copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements Techniques magazine arrived the other day! The article on using a word cloud caught my eye! I used this info to create an easy tutorial on this technique. If you need additional help, it's in the Jan/Feb. 2012 issue. Side note- It's a great mag and website!

Adding a Word Cloud to Your Photo

Materials

Photoshop Elements 10

Word Art Program (free)- Wordle

Directions

1. Visit Wordle and create a word cloud

Save by hitting the print key. Select Save as pdf file

2. Open the pdf file in Elements

3. If not transparent, select the magic wand tool (w)

Next, make sure the contiguous option is not checked.

Then, click once on the background

Finally, press the delete key.

You now have a transparent layer.

4. Press Control T (mac- command T)

This command creates a free form bounding box.

Size and move, as needed.

5. Save as a png to preserve transparency

That's it! I'm a newbie and was able to do it on the first attempt!

Learning Photoshop Elements 10- Texts

I given myself another challenge as a way to learn Elements 10. With the help of Elements Techniques magazine, I was able to put together this poster. The Novermber/December 2011 issue has a very good tutorial on how to place a photo inside text. However, the text on the curvy line was a bit tricky. After fooling with the "Text on a Custom Path" tool for what seemed like an eternity, I finally did it! Since winter doesn't officially begin this year until December 22nd, it's okay for me to make a fall poster...really... Linking to Mellow Yellow Monday.

Modjeska- Heaven Wrapped in Waxed Paper

I captured a picture of Muth's most famous confection. It's the Modjeska. You can read about its history here. These individually wrapped caramel coated marshmallows are heavenily! I searched the internet and found a recipe for them. I hope someone will test this recipe and let me know how they turned out...

Caramel-Wrapped Marshmallows

Makes about 20 candies

2 cups white sugar

1 cup light Karo corn syrup

1/2 pound margarine

1 large can (12 ounces) evaporated milk

1 small can (5 ounces) evaporated milk

pinch of baking soda

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 package regular-sized marshmallows

Allow one full hour for preparation and follow instructions exactly. Do not attempt on a damp or rainy day. Boil the sugar and Karo syrup until mixture reaches 254 degrees on a candy thermometer.

Add the margarine and stir until melted. Keep the syrup boiling as you add the milk, a little at a time, and stir constantly. Add a pinch of baking soda and the vanilla and boil and stir until mixture reaches 237 degrees (or soft-ball stage).

Pour into a buttered pan, without scraping the sides of the pan. Allow to cool until comfortable to the touch. Cut into 1-inch squares. Take each square of caramel and stretch out flat enough to fold around a marshmallow. Wrap in wax-paper squares. Or cut caramel into smaller square and dip in chocolate. Or just cut in squares and wrap as caramels.

TIPS:

Tester Laura Reiley’s comments: As with all candy-making, be sure to proceed carefully - that sugar syrup is hot! The key with this caramel is to get that burnished brown color without taking the mixture past the soft-ball stage (the candy will harden too much if you take it up to 242 degrees (firm ball) or 250 degrees (hard ball).

The other key point is that you need to mold the caramel while it’s still hot (but won’t burn you). Otherwise, it gets too firm to wrap around the marshmallows.

The rich caramel would also be lovely wrapped around cashews or other whole nuts. Store the candies in an airtight, low-humidity spot, and they will last several days. Beyond that, they get sticky.

I like to be able to post from my Ipad 2 when I'm on an adventure; however, BlogPress doesn't work with the Ipad 2. After a million crashes, it was time to move on... Did a little searching and found Blogsy. Aside from liking the name, I decided to give it a try. It was a $4.99 investment.. So far, it's been easy to use. I see many formatting options...I thought I'd test it... easy... I don't see a "link to" button... hmmm...wait, I think I found it... Texture... Uploading photos was a snap!! I like it...Final test...Will it post happily to my blog??? Making photo story boards are a breeze after suffering through creating one for the first time. I found this template online at Gingerpixel. I'm learning that shortcut keys are very important... On a Mac- "command t" resizes and constrains... "command g" creates a clipping mask... I'm learning...

Fifty-Two Weeks...Tending the Bucket List

Today Mac and I went on the first of 52 adventures. We traveled to Shaker Village in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. The weather was perfect, and I was able to get some descent shots. Walking the grounds was topped off with afternoon tea. The menu included scones and an assortment of sandwiches, breads, and sweets. I think the photo captures the timeless beauty of simple things.

52 Weeks...Tending the Bucket List

Most of things left to do on my bucket list involve travel to faraway places. It will take time to save the money to fulfill those lofty dreams. Yesterday, I decided to revise my list. I've added an adventure a week for the next fifty-two weeks. The fun begins this week with a trip to Shakertown. It's been years since I've visited this historic site. I'm looking forward to afternoon tea and exploring the grounds. I've chosen a beautiful bucket as a reminder that life is short and should be filled with simple joys. This photo will be entered in the Simple Things Photo Challenge and Texture Thursday Challenge.

If you check my sidebar, you'll see a badge for making the Top Five in last week's Photography Challenge! Wow! It was so unexpected!!! Thanks, Faith!!! This week's Photography Challenge is Gratitude. Among all the many, many, many things I'm grateful for, having grandchildren is at the top of an extremely long list. This picture was taken last summer with a point and shoot camera. Little Alex, 16 months at the time, sat on a horse for the first time. Even though he looks serious, he loved sitting on it. With the grandkids living in another state, it's photos like these that remind me of my blessings.

It's an enjoyable place to visit. They also invite visitors to submit a local photo. Since it's a rainy day in Kentucky, I decided to see what I could find from my front porch. Benson tolerates being photographed only because he knows he'll earn a biscuit at the end of the shoot. Most of his poses are profiles because he always looks away from the camera when he sees it. I was really surprised when I captured this shot of him. I've entered it in this week's Show and Tell Challenge.

Need to be Frugal

The cat's out of the bag. I've a new hobby/obsession! Like all hobbies, it comes with a price ... Photography has to been my most expensive endeavor to date. I have a wish list that's growing as I type. I decided to try my hand at being frugal. It's such an "old" word. I'm thinking "Living on the Cheap" has a better ring. To kick off this life style, I have found a wonderful recipe for croutons. I've never even thought of making them until I came across a crouton recipe. Since I love croutons, it seem like something I needed to test. With my surplus of leftover bread, I went to work. It was easy and they are delicious. I figure I can save about $8.00 a month on croutons. Have your priced croutons lately?? Let's see... a macro lens from Amazon ($429/ $8= 53 months...= 4.5 years...) Looks like I need to find some other ways of "Living on the Cheap!" Enjoy!

Croutons

Prep Time: --- | Cook Time: --- | Servings: 4 cups | Difficulty: ---

Ingredients:

15 slices bread
1/4 cup butter, melted
2 teaspoons garlic salt (optional)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Remove crusts from stale bread slices. Brush bread on both sides with melted butter. Cut bread slices up into small cubes. Sprinkle with garlic salt (if desired). Arrange cubes on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 15 minutes or until browned. Let cool. Store croutons in a covered container or plastic bag. Serve in soups or salads.

When I was in the card making phase of my life, I discovered a community of people who where making cards and competing in challenges. It was a lot of fun and I made many cyber friends along the way. Well, tonight I discovered that there is another community of people doing the same thing with photography. Need I say more...I do love a challenge...

White Castle Casserole

Yes, I like White Castle hamburgers. I know most people won't admit to enjoying the tasty little burgers. Here's a recipe for those of you who sneak to the Castle... Enjoy the king of burgers in the privacy of your home. This recipe actually reminds me of the burger of my youth. Enjoy!

White Castle Casserole

Prep Time: --- | Cook Time: --- | Servings: 8 | Difficulty: ---

Ingredients:

1 (1 3/4 ounce) package onion soup mix (Dry)
2 (12 ounce) cans crescent rolls
1 1/4 lbs hamburger
American cheese (Around eight slices)
pickle
mustard

Directions:

1. Cook hamburger with onion mix, Dry extremely well.

2. Lay whole can of crescent rolls in bottom of pan (do not break apart)

3. Layer hamburger mixture, cheese, pickles and squirt mustard up and down across pan.

4. Put whole can of crescent rolls on top.

5. Bake at 350 until golden brown.

6. Cut in squares.

7. Hints I find shredded cheese taste better. I also made one with shredded pepper jack cheese. The people went for that one first.

Card Night/Tailgate Party

I have a confession...I've never been to a Tailgating Party. In the adult world that's like saying you're not in the popular crowd. That won't stop me from having a good time. I'm a 60 year old Sue Heck! Here's one of the recipes for tonight's gathering. I hope you noticed that they are little footballs... if not, just pretend that you do. It's a Paula Dean recipe, need I say more...

BTW I don't know why everything is in capital letters. I'm not shouting.

Traditional Southern Deviled Eggs

Prep Time: 15 min | Cook Time: 10 min | Servings: 14 eggs | Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients:

7 large eggs, hard boiled and peeled
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1 1/2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
Salt and pepper, for taste
Paprika, for garnishing
Sweet gherkin pickles sliced, for garnishing
Pimentos, for garnishing

Directions:

Halve 7 eggs lengthwise. Remove yolks and place in a small bowl.

Mash yolks with a fork and stir in mayonnaise, pickle relish, and mustard. Add salt and pepper, to taste.

Fill egg whites evenly with yolk mixture. Garnish with paprika, pickles and pimentos. Store covered in refrigerator.

Another Texas Sheet Cake Recipe

Texas Sheet Cake V

Prep Time: 10 Min | Cook Time: 20 Min | Servings: 1 - 10x15 inch jellyroll pan | Difficulty: ---

Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sour cream
2 eggs
1 cup butter
1 cup water
5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
6 tablespoons milk
5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup butter
4 cups confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10x15 inch pan.

Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. Beat in the sour cream and eggs. Set aside. Melt the butter on low in a saucepan, add the water and 5 tablespoons cocoa. Bring mixture to a boil then remove from heat. Allow to cool slightly, then stir cocoa mixture into the egg mixture, mixing until blended.

Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

For the icing: In a large saucepan, combine the milk, 5 tablespoons cocoa and 1/2 cup butter. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat. Stir in the confectioners' sugar and vanilla, then fold in the nuts, mixing until blended. Spread frosting over warm cake.

I decided to test a chicken salad recipe today. I guess it's called Holiday Chicken Salad because it calls for dried cranberries...We still have tomatoes from our garden, and they complimented this delicious recipe quite well. If you like crunch, you'll enjoy it. I've included the recipe and a link to the site where I found it.

Holiday Chicken Salad

Prep Time: 15 Min | Cook Time: --- | Servings: 12 servings | Difficulty: ---

Ingredients:

4 cups cubed, cooked chicken meat
1 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon paprika
1 1/2 cups dried cranberries
1 cup chopped celery
2 green onions, chopped
1/2 cup minced green bell pepper
1 cup chopped pecans
1 teaspoon seasoning salt
ground black pepper to taste

Directions:

In a medium bowl, mix together mayonnaise with paprika and seasoned salt. Blend in dried cranberries, celery, bell pepper, onion, and nuts. Add chopped chicken, and mix well. Season with black pepper to taste. Chill 1 hour.

Casino Gift

A few cruises ago, I played the slot machines. There is a reason why they call them the one arm bandits. After losing a great deal of money, I went home unhappy with myself. I now have a winning strategy for when I cruise. Instead of gambling, I shop for things I would never buy for myself at home. It's a can't lose plan. With my "say no to the casino" money, I purchased a Philip Stein watch! Don't really believe in the "Natural Frequencies Inside" mumbo jumbo; but, it definitely makes me feel good about not visiting the ship's casino...

The first thing I noticed about this ship were the low ceilings. They appear to be lower because of all the detailed designs that incorporate the "Legends" theme. The elevators give the illusion of walking into a pyramid or tomb. The hallways are like labyrinths. I think I will find this fun when I get used to it. Once in the cabin, we found the room to be quite nice. It's bright and cheery with plenty of room. Our obstructed balcony is just as described...obstructed by a couple of lifeboats. I new that going in, so it doesn't bother me. It's nice to sit on a balcony while cruising. It's time for the muster drill..my last m. Drill is a very bad memory...hope history doesn't repeat itself...
